We’ll take a closer look at the Asus TUF FX505DV gaming laptop in our review. On paper, it has some impressive specifications, but the price tag was the deciding factor in our decision to evaluate this laptop.

At first glance, this seems to be the best and cheapest gaming laptop with a GeForce RTX 2060 graphics card presently available. What’s more amazing is that it doesn’t seem to be lacking in any other aspect.

So, what’s the catch, exactly? You are free to inquire.

You’ll have to stay around and read the whole review to find out more about it and much more. We paid close attention to every aspect and made sure to include everything that you, as a possible future owner of this gaming laptop, may be interested in.

We evaluated the laptop’s performance, display, build quality, typing and everyday usage comfort, as well as all of its features. Apart from that, we evaluated the overall design and attempted to be as impartial as possible, since everyone is different.

Enough with the rhetoric; let’s get down to business. Are you all set?

Specifications

Before we get into the technical details, bear in mind that this laptop comes in a variety of configurations with different graphics cards, CPUs, storage choices, and other features. The specifications for the TUF FX505DV by ASUS, the model we utilized for this review, are shown below.

  • 15.6-inch display
  • FullHD 1920×1080 resolution
  • IPS (In-Plane Switching)
  • 120 Hz Refresh Rate (up to 144hz)

  • 16GB RAM at 2400MHz
  • HDD: 1TB
  • 512GB SSD
  • 2.2 kg in weight

Performance

Gaming

Let’s get down to business now that the formalities are out of the way. Despite the fact that the FX505DV is marketed as an entry-level gaming laptop, it packs a punch. The Ryzen 7 3750H and nVidia RTX 2060 worked well together to run all of the games we tested. We were able to get 100+ FPS in nearly all competitive games, including Overwatch, Fortnite, CS:GO, and others, thanks to the FullHD quality of the display.

In fact, we tested a number of different games on this laptop and were very pleased with the results. As previously stated, we were able to achieve 100+ FPS in the following competitive games: Overwatch, CS:GO, Fortnite, and PubG. Also, keep in mind that this is with everything turned up to eleven.

Apex Legends was the only competitive game in which we didn’t able to break 100 frames per second on the highest setting. We were, however, very near, with an average frame rate of 91 frames per second.

Nonetheless, this is excellent news for those competitive players who want to use the 144hz screen. And it’s even more impressive when you consider the TUF FX505DV’s pricing.

1629677924_710_Asus-TUF-FX505DV-Review-%E2%80%93-Powerful-Gaming-Laptop-That-Wont

Another pleasant surprise is how cool and silent the laptop is while under high load, especially when compared to other gaming laptops in the same price range. The CPU temperatures stayed in the 82-87 degree range throughout our gaming, which is very decent considering what’s beneath the hood. With the GPU, similar results were achieved. Even with ray tracing enabled, it runs cold, in the region of 75-80 degrees.

The basic line is that you can play almost any game presently available. With older, less demanding games, you’ll be able to max up the settings while still getting flawlessly smooth frames on the 144hz monitor.

However, if you like recent games and AAA titles, you’ll have to make a trade-off between detail quality and smooth action on your screen, since the RTX 2060 isn’t strong enough to run them at their highest settings.

production of content

When it comes to gaming, you’ll probably agree with us that this laptop performs well. But, in terms of content creation, such as video editing, graphics design, and so on, does it deliver the same results? If that is your concern, we have some excellent news for you.

It’s no secret that this laptop was designed mainly for gaming, but it’s also capable of doing professional tasks. With four cores and eight threads, the Ryzen 7 3750H CPU is more than capable of heavy work. You’ll be able to edit movies, multitask like crazy, and do other memory-intensive activities with up to 32GB of RAM (there’s space for another 16GB stick).

There is also space for a 2.5” disk for additional data storage.

The display, however, is the finest component and the feature that you would value the most for professional work. It has an IPS panel, which is preferred by most content producers (as well as gamers). Specifically, because of the precise and vivid colors it can generate, as well as the ideal viewing angles it can provide.

And we have to agree, this particular show is very impressive. It does generate very realistic colors (130 percent of sRGB), and the colors stay consistent no matter how you look at the screen. But that’s covered in the ‘display’ section.

Don’t get us wrong: this laptop was designed to be a punishing gaming machine, and it is, but it can also be used for video editing and other professional tasks, which is a big bonus.

Design

The entire build quality and design of the ASUS TUF FX505DV is another area where it excels. This laptop, like other TUF products, provides exceptional durability and a distinctive style that has garnered a large following over time.

In terms of design, we thought ASUS did a fantastic job. For starters, you can select from three distinct color schemes: Gold Steel, Stealth Black, and Red Matter. This allows you to not only choose a color scheme that you prefer, but also how open you want to be about owning a gaming laptop.

Because of the vivid red components on the rear of the laptop, which mimic the ROG series of goods, Red Matter will immediately identify you as a gamer. The Gold Steel variant, with the TUF orange logo and sandblasting finish on the back, is definitely our favorite. Finally, the steal black, as the name implies, comes in all black and seems to be extremely, uh…stealthy.

The X-shaped etching on the rear, which ASUS refers to as the “Radiating-X design,” distinguishes this laptop from others. We must agree, it looks fantastic and gives the laptop an aggressive, modern appearance. The beveled edges of the screen’s corners are another feature we appreciated, since they contribute to the laptop’s compactness and stability.

Aside from that, given how strong and sturdy the laptop is, it only weighs about 2.2kg/4.9lbs, making it an excellent travel companion if you need to carry it to work or school.

Create a high-quality product

Overall, the laptop has a sturdy and small feel about it. There are no squeaks, rattles, or other noises, which we were relieved to discover given that the laptop is mainly constructed of plastic components.

Apart from that, ASUS claims to have put it through a series of stress tests to guarantee the greatest degree of endurance, which should result in a longer lifetime. Extreme temperatures, different stress and vibration tests, and even something as bizarre as an excessive solar-radiation exposure were all part of the testing.

I’m not sure whether all of that was required, but it may give you greater confidence that small bumps or drops during travel will not have a significant effect on the laptop’s performance. However, no promises can be made, and you should remember that this is a laptop, not a football, so being extra careful is a good idea.

On the other hand, the two features you’ll use the most on this laptop (the keyboard and touchpad) left us with mixed emotions. While the keyboard is almost flawless, we did not like using the touchpad at all. It’s a little shaky, makes a lot of noise when pushed, and doesn’t seem very sensitive.

On the plus side, this is a gaming laptop, so you’ll probably simply put in a mouse and forget about the touchpad. Perhaps that is why they didn’t put much work into it to begin with.

However, as previously said, the keyboard is excellent. It’s big, pleasant to type on, responsive and accurate for gaming, has RGB illumination (albeit just one zone), a numpad, doesn’t bend too much when you push down on it, and is rated for 20 million strokes. In essence, it contains all of the features that a good keyboard should have.

Overall, the FX505DV was built to endure, and it most certainly will, in our opinion.

I/O Ports

When it comes to connection, it has plenty of I/O ports for gaming peripherals, headphones, and connecting the laptop to an external display.

We loved how all of the ports are on one side of the laptop, so you always know where to look when you need to plug anything in. Aside from that, nothing will get in the way of your mouse since they’re all on the left side. Unless, of course, you’re left-handed.

1629677925_379_Asus-TUF-FX505DV-Review-%E2%80%93-Powerful-Gaming-Laptop-That-Wont

Ports for I/O:

  • Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45 Jack
  • To connect to an external monitor, use HDMI 2.0.
  • For peripherals, USB 2.0 (1x) and USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A (2x) are available (mouse, keyboard, etc.)
  • A headset with a 3.5mm audio jack is required.

On the ASUS TUF FX505DV, that’s all the ports you’ll find. Unfortunately, there is no USB Type-C connector or SD card reader, which is rather disappointing for a laptop of this quality.

Features

The attention to detail on the TUF FX505DV, despite the fact that this isn’t their top-of-the-line model, is one of the many things we loved about it. It has a lot of useful features that will make your life simpler. They also contribute to the overall performance.

Here’s a brief rundown of the TUF FX505DV’s features, as well as our opinions on them:

  • Dual Fan Design – The FX505DV’s cooling system has been fine-tuned to perfection. When the fans are spinning at their maximum RPM, the laptop does not overheat or produce excessive noise. The primary reason for this is the clever positioning of two fans, one of which draws air in from the side and the other of which exhausts hot air from the rear of the laptop.
  • Anti-dust Cooling — Another neat feature is the anti-dust cooling technology, which helps keep the interior of the laptop free of dust and other airborne particles. While it may not be the most interesting feature, it is critical to maintain your laptop clean on the exterior as well as the inside. Attention to detail, as previously said.
  • Armoury Crate – The armoury crate is a tool that allows you to control many items from one location. You may change the lighting, create a separate profile for a family member, but most importantly, you can monitor the status of each component, from GPU and CPU temperatures to fan RPM, RAM frequencies, and storage use, among other things. Apart from that, it is well-designed and very simple to use, and we strongly advise you to download it. It’ll come in handy if your laptop begins to overheat or the fans get too loud. You can immediately determine the source of the issue and fix the situation.

  • RGB Backlit Keyboard — As we said before, the keyboard not only provides comfort and responsiveness, but it also has vivid RGB illumination. Unfortunately, it only has one lighting zone, which means you can only have one color on the keyboard at a time. On the plus side, there are four distinct preset effects to choose from: breathing, static, color cycle, and strobing. Overall, we have to remark that the lighting is excellent.
  • Real-time Ray Tracing — You will be able to activate ray tracing in your games thanks to the introduction of the nVidia RTX 2060 graphics card. The games get much smoother with ray tracing enabled, with more details in shadows and nearly life-like visuals. It’s worth noting, though, that the RTX 2060 isn’t capable of running all games at high resolution with ray tracing enabled. To enable ray tracing, you’ll have to reduce the settings once more.

The Final Word

To summarize, the ASUS TUF FX505DV is a stylish, well-performing, and unquestionably high-quality gaming laptop. It allows you to play the newest and most demanding games at smooth frame rates, as well as competitive games in which you can fully use the 144hz panel to gain a competitive advantage over your opponents.

Furthermore, the cooling system has been well-designed, and the laptop remains quite cool and silent even under heavy loads, which is something that not everyone gets right these days.

With an IPS panel, 32GB of RAM, and a powerful CPU, the laptop also has some good content production skills. It offers a lot of storage (with space for expansion), a decent I/O selection, and a lot of features, the greatest of which is the price – we are certain that you will not find a better gaming laptop in this price range.

But, to be honest, it’s far from ideal. The laptop loses a few points due to the absence of a USB type-C connector and an SD card reader, as well as the low quality of the touchpad.

Overall, we liked using the laptop for both gaming and everyday tasks, and we would gladly suggest it to anybody seeking for a stylish, sturdy, and powerful gaming laptop at a reasonable price!
