Every computer’s motherboard is an essential component. Its main function is to connect all PC components and ensure that they operate as a single unit. As a result, it’s critical to choose a motherboard that will serve as a solid foundation for your computer, complete with appropriate software and features.

That’s why we’ve compiled a list of the best gaming motherboards for 2020, so you can pick the one that’s right for you and get your gaming machine off to a good start.

When selecting a motherboard, check sure it is compatible with your CPU and RAM, as well as having adequate slots for additional components like as graphics cards and hard drives.

Another factor to consider before purchasing a new motherboard is how your computer is used. Office motherboards often feature fewer slots for additional components, are software-customized for optimum efficiency, and are, of course, less expensive. Gaming motherboards, on the other hand, which we shall discuss today, have more slots, superior software, and technology, allowing them to manage higher loads and provide a seamless gaming experience.

In general, the number of slots and their quality, better software, better cooling, and more features distinguish more costly motherboards from less expensive ones. You’re future-proofing your PC to some degree with more costly motherboards.

Overclocking is also a common feature on gaming motherboards. Aside from that, the better the board, the more you can overclock your CPU and RAM.

Consider These Factors Before Purchasing A Motherboard

Format

Mini-ITX, microATX, and ATX are the three most common motherboard formats. The smallest is Mini-ITX, which is frequently seen in less powered PCs. These motherboards only feature one PCI-e x16 slot, which means that only one graphics card can be installed, and it’s tough to arrange the cooling and other components so that they don’t interfere with each other.

If you want to construct a more powerful PC, either a microATX or an ATX motherboard is the way to go. Consider the size of your case and whether or not you’ll require the amount of slots ATX motherboards provide when deciding between the two.

MicroATX motherboards often offer enough slots for any casual gamer, making ATX a viable choice for higher-end gaming setups.

You may come across E-ATX motherboards, which are bigger than ATX motherboards, but they are mostly utilized in workstation systems, so purchasing one for your PC would be a waste of money.

Socket

The socket is another item to keep an eye out for. Different processors use sockets that are incompatible with one another. You must choose a motherboard that is compatible with your CPU.

New sockets are usually released every five years or so to guarantee optimum performance, efficacy, and support for the most recent features. Intel and AMD are the two main manufacturers at the moment, and each utilizes a variety of sockets.

Support for RAM

There are two kinds of RAMs on the market right now: older DDR3 and newer DDR4. DDR4 RAMs have now become the industry standard due to their speed, efficiency, and the fact that a single module can hold up to 32GB of memory.

As a result, purchasing a motherboard that supports DDR3 is pointless. The only exception is if you want to utilize RAM from an older computer.

The most crucial slots

  • PCI-Express — PCI-e slots exist in a variety of configurations, each with a different number of pins; PCI-e x16 slots are designed for high-end graphics cards. If you’re planning to construct a multi-GPU system, ensure sure your motherboard has enough of these slots. PCI-e x8/x4 slots are designed for less powerful graphics cards, as well as other devices that need quicker data transmission in the future. Basic PCI-e x1 slots are designed for smaller devices like sound cards, TV cards, and so forth.
  • SATA (Serial ATA) – SATA slots are used to connect hard drives. Every motherboard usually contains enough for a regular user, although the speed may vary. The fastest SATA III drives offer a bandwidth throughput of up to 6 GB/s, which is sufficient for rapid SSDs. However, this is not the case with newer SSDs with quicker technology, since newer and better connections – the M.2/U.2 – are available for them.
  • M.2/U.2 — These types of connections, which have considerably greater bandwidth throughput, are used with newer and faster SSD drives. Keep the M.2/U.2 connection in mind when selecting a new motherboard if you want to use a speedier SSD drive in your PC.
  • USB Ports – Each motherboard has a number of USB ports for connecting various devices. You should think about the quantity and kind of USB ports available. Most motherboards include both fast USB 3.0/3.1 and slower USB 2.0 ports. Nonetheless, we’re seeing an increasing number of motherboards with the new USB Type-C port.

At lower price points, ASUS hasn’t always been the most popular option. Their motherboards are of the highest quality, but to be honest, the price-to-performance ratio has never been one of their strong suits. However, with the new TUF Gaming lineup for the AM4 platform, things have changed. It is not only a top choice in its price range right now, but it also offers great value for your money.

For a reason, the Asus TUF Gaming X-570-Plus is at the top of our list. To begin with, it includes all of the benefits of the latest AMD X570 chipset, such as PCI-e 4.0 slots, multiple M.2 4.0 slots (with twice the bandwidth compared to 3.0), super fast USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports, the best audio (Realtek S1200A Codec), and WiFi (802.11ac) solutions, all while providing top-level performance for a very, very reasonable price.

But the ASUS TUF Gaming X-570X-Plus is more than that. It was constructed using the finest quality materials and cutting-edge technologies to guarantee optimum durability and stability throughout time. With VRM, chipset, and M, it features a six-layer PCB design. 2 heatsinks to maintain the most essential components at the right temperature so you may push your system to its limits without fear.

One of the most popular motherboards using the older AMD X470 Chipset is the ASUS ROG Strix X470-F Gaming. If you’re presently utilizing a 2nd Generation Ryzen CPU and need a motherboard upgrade, this one is worth checking into. It features three x16 PCI-e 3.0 slots, two M.2 slots with heatsinks, and a number of fast USB ports, including a type-C port on the rear I/O panel.

It has a nice, stealthy, darker aspect to it in terms of design. To be honest, the graffiti and fabric tag utilized on the board do not appeal to me. I believe they are incompatible, but I will leave it to you to decide. The only RGB on the board is the ROG logo on the I/O panel cover, which is probably a good thing since graffiti, fabric tags, and a slew of RGB lights would make your case seem like a college party.

The high-quality onboard audio of the ASUS ROG Strix X470-F Gaming is fantastic — the SupremeFX S1220A Codec, along with the Sonic Studio III, delivers a fantastic audio experience. The standard Intel Gigabit Ethernet is used for the LAN connection.

The ASUS ROG Strix X470-F Gaming additionally has the following features:

  • Pre-Mounted I/O Panel — The attractive matte black I/O panel is pre-mounted, so you won’t have any trouble installing the motherboard.
  • Q-LEDs — These onboard LED indications can help you identify possible issues with the CPU, graphics card, RAM, and boot device fast.
  • Solid Capacitors of High Quality — The capacitors on the side of your CPU have been tested to withstand temperatures ranging from -55°C to 105°C. I’m not sure how helpful it is in real life, but at the very least you can rest certain that every last detail has been considered.
  • ASUS 5-Way Optimization 5-Way Optimization is a system tuning tool that overclocks your GPU automatically while simultaneously monitoring and adjusting your fan speeds to achieve a balance of performance, cooling, and acoustics. As a result, you may push your system without fear of overheating or instability.

The MSI X370 XPOWER Gaming Titanium was the most costly and sophisticated motherboard for the AM4 socket at the time of its introduction. It’s still a great mobo for gamers that like severe overclocking, and it’ll set you back less than half of what you’d spend for it when it was originally launched.

Despite having the X370 chipset, it can compete in terms of connection with the latest boards utilizing the X570 chipset. It features three PCI-e x16 slots with SLi and CF support, two M.2 slots (3.0 and 2.0), a U.2 slot, six SATA 6 Gb/s slots, and many USB ports, including a USB type-C connector. Intel’s gigabit Ethernet and the high-quality ALC 1220 Codec audio are also included.

The most notable feature of the MSI X370 XPOWER Gaming Titanium is its capability for high-end overclocking. You may push your system to its limits with a high-quality power supply that supports 4 + 6 + 6 pin ATX 12V + 24 pin and six fan connections with DC/PWM mode, as well as a plethora of system tweaking and troubleshooting options.

Looking at the board, we have to remark that it is very elegant. The board is entirely white with silver heatsinks, giving it a beautiful finished appearance. The board does not have RGB support, however it does have RGB support via the RGB header on the bottom of the board.

The MSI X370 XPOWER Gaming Titanium also has the following features:

  • Water Cooling Support — If you choose one of the most popular All-in-one or custom water cooling solutions on the market, a dedicated water pump header supporting up to 2A will enable you to use one of the most popular All-in-one or custom water cooling solutions on the market.

Gigabyte’s B450 Aorus Elite takes the fifth and final place in our list of AMD boards for a variety of reasons. To begin with, despite having the older B450 chipset, the Bios update has made it completely compatible with Ryzen 3rd Gen CPUs. So, if you’re on a budget and want a good board that supports Ryzen 3000 CPUs, this is the one to buy.

Aside from that, it’s a decent performer with enough connection to appeal to a broad range of gamers. It supports RAM speeds up to 3200MHz with a maximum capacity of 64GB, two PCI-e x16 slots with AMD Crossfire support if you ever decide on a dual GPU setup, two M.2 slots for super fast NVMe SSDs, a rich I/O panel that comes pre-mounted, with DVI-D and HDMI ports that you can use if you own one of AMD’s integrated graphics processors, and plenty of USB 2.0 and 3.1 Gen 1 ports. Unfortunately, there are no USB 3.1 or 3.2 Gen 2 ports available.

In terms of design, we can observe that it has a basic design with numerous LED zones, giving the board a more upscale appearance. There is also plenty of opportunity for modification through the RGB Fusion 2.0 software, which includes sophisticated tools and a plethora of light effects to enable you to further customize your system if you so want.

The Gigabyte B450 Aorus Elite also has the following features:

  • AORUS M.2 Thermal Guard – The M.2 Thermal Guard helps to decrease and disperse heat before it becomes a problem, preventing throttling and bottlenecks from M.2 devices.
  • AMD StoreMI is a powerful tool that combines the speed of your SSD with the capacity of your HDD to create a single, easy-to-manage drive. The AMD StoreMI combines the two kinds of storage into a single drive and transfers your most often used files to your SSD automatically.
  • Shield Armor for Integrated I/O – The integrated I/O shield has a stylish, long-lasting design that makes setting up your computer a breeze.

*AMD StoreMI software is only available with AMD X399, 400, or 500-series chipset motherboards. Find out more.

The Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master is the board to look at if you want a high-end board with the newest LGA1151 socket for your Coffee Lake Refresh CPU. It has great gaming performance as well as strong overclocking capabilities. When it comes to overclocking, the Gigabyte BIOS isn’t the most user-friendly, but it does provide the most choices of any BIOS I’ve encountered. So, if you’re a seasoned overclocker, you’ll appreciate what this board has to offer in terms of overclocking.

Looking at the board itself, it seems to have enough slots and connections to handle even the most advanced gaming setups. It includes three PCI-e x16 slots with CF and SLi support for multiple GPUs, three M.2 slots (all three with their own heatsink), memory support up to 4400MHz with a 64GB maximum capacity, and, of course, super fast USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports, including a type-C connection for super rapid data transmission. This board also has built-in WiFi (Intel CNVi 802.11ac) and high-definition audio (Realtek ALC1220-VB Codec).

The board seems unassuming at first sight, but upon closer inspection, everything appears to be very accurate and professional, just as you want. The brushed metal heatsinks are the cherry on top, giving the board a really premium appearance.

The RGB Fusion 2.0 Software, as well as the addressable and non-addressable RGB headers on this board, allow you to personalize your lighting with a variety of choices and effects.

The GIGABYTE Z390 AORUS Master also includes the following features:

One of ASUS’ most popular mainstream boards is the ROG Strix Z390-E Gaming. It has a nice design, a lot of connections, and a good build quality. It also includes a lot of overclocking capabilities, but if you don’t want to spend time manually tuning your board, you can utilize the 5-way optimization system, which performs all the work for you and raises the CPU clock rate automatically, giving you more performance.

Looking at the board, it seems to be outfitted in the manner that you would expect from a high-end board. It features three PCI-e x16 slots, two of which are reinforced, as well as support for CF or SLi multi-GPU configurations. When compared to the Z370 chipset, the RAM can be overclocked to 4266 MHz, which is a significant improvement. There are two M.2 slots on the rear I/O, each with a dedicated heatsink, six SATA 6 Gb/s connections, and four extremely fast USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports on the back I/O, one of which is type-C.

The major difference between this and the Z370 platform is that it has inbuilt Wi-Fi, which means that all Z390 boards, regardless of model, will come with Wi-Fi. Kudos to Intel for that. The Intel 802.11ac Wi-Fi with Wireless AC 9560 adapter is included in this package, and it delivers wireless data 2x quicker than other Wi-Fi solutions.

The ASUS ROG Strix Z390-E Gaming additionally has the following features:

  • Hybrid Fan Pin Headers – All Hybrid Fan Headers can automatically identify the kind of cooling device, whether it’s a fan or a pump, and can operate in a variety of PWM and Voltage modes, allowing you to create a powerful, flexible cooling system.
  • Intel Optane Memory Ready – Intel Optane is a memory technology that speeds up your storage devices by reducing boot and load times, resulting in a more responsive system overall.
  • Reinforced PCI-e And Memory Slots — The Memory and PCI-e slots armor is constructed from a single piece of stainless steel, providing greater stability and endurance.

The MSI B360 Gaming Plus is the final Intel board on our list. This isn’t your average high-end motherboard with all the bells and whistles you’d expect to see on this list. Without the option to overclock, this is a decent board with everything a casual gamer needs. So, if you’re not into overclocking and are searching for a budget-friendly choice with excellent value, I strongly advise you to take this one up.

It offers everything a casual game could possibly require, including support for 9th Gen Intel CPUs, the fastest SSD drives on the market, a large number of extremely fast USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports, and multi-GPU setup through AMD Crossfire. And it’s all at a reasonable cost.

One disadvantage of this board is that the memory speed is limited to 2666MHz. That isn’t to say you can’t put in faster RAM; it simply means you won’t be able to go faster than 2666MHz. This is only one of the features of the B360 chipset.

The MSI B360 Gaming Plus also has the following features:

  • Steel Armor PCI-e – Steel Armor technology is used in one of the PCI-e x16 slots, making it more robust and protecting your graphics card from bending and EMI.
  • Mystic Light Sync – Allows you to control RGB LED solutions from other manufacturers, allowing you to easily synchronize the lighting of your other components.
  • 7 Fan Header + Watercooling Support — With seven fan headers and a dedicated pin header for the water pump, you’ll have enough of support and choices to keep your system cool even when under heavy strain.

The process to build a gaming rig is complicated, especially if you are building a new one from scratch. First, you buy a case, then a motherboard, an graphics card, a CPU, RAM, and a power supply. In addition to buying all the parts, you have to install all the parts in the case and wire them together, then set everything up in Windows, and finally, load up all the games you want to play..
