Luigi’s Mansion 3 is a game that kind of just feels like it should have been a Halloween title. Luigi has a mansion full of ghosts to haunt, and it’s spooky. Well, maybe not so much for Luigi, but some ghosts are attracted to light, and that’s what this game is—a game full of spooks.

Luigi might have gotten the shaft in the last few Luigi’s Mansion games, but in Luigi’s Mansion 3 (or just “Luigi’s Mansion 3” since that’s what everyone else calls it these days) he’s finally treated to a proper sequel. Nintendo isn’t known for its commercial acumen; the much-loved third installment in Nintendo’s haunted-house series, launched on Halloween, builds on the advances made in Luigi’s Mansion 2 for the 3DS while also serving as a seasonal alternative to Pokemon releases. Developer Next Level Games has gone above and beyond expectations… or so it appears on paper. With a few gameplay improvements, gorgeous set design and lighting elements, a supremely useful sidekick/co-op partner, and a ghoul-infested hotel to explore, Next Level Games has gone above and beyond expectations… or so it appears on paper. Does the rather shallow gameplay concept of sucking up ghosts have any real attraction for anybody above the age of, say, twelve who values their time, was a question I didn’t expect to be asking myself. Let’s shed some light on this enigma.

“Luigi’s Mansion 3” is not a reboot, but rather a direct sequel to the original “Luigi’s Mansion” game on the Nintendo 64. The game takes place a year after the events of the original game, where Luigi is once again being stalked by a ghost named Poltergust 5000 (who can only be seen with a special flashlight). The game’s story is not terribly complicated, as the gang is once again tasked with solving a haunted house’s problems, and once again they will be accompanied by a ghost named Beaky… who is not nearly as sinister as he was in the original game..
