Paper Mario: The Origami King is a game that has a lot of paper. The best part of this game is that you can do all the things that you love doing in the Mario series, while you are doing it in a different way. The concept is you are on a set of wheels with a paper mustache and a paper hat, and you can move across a series of structures that are made out of paper. The maps are filled with many different enemies, and you have to go through nooks and crannies to get to each one. When it comes to the Paper Mario games, one stands out above the rest: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door from 2004, which is a great mix of conventional turn-based role-playing action, contextual puzzle-solving, and precisely timed button pushes. The Thousand-Year Door was full of spirit and passion. Not only were the characters interesting and the plot unexpected, but we also got to witness aspects of Peach and Bowser we’d never seen before. Unfortunately, the Paper Mario series went in a different path after that, with less emphasis on narrative (as shown in this insightful Iwata Asks interview), and conventional fights were abandoned in favor of experimental gameplay features beginning with Super Paper Mario.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star and Paper Mario: Color Splash did away with RPG advancement completely, replacing it with combat systems that included consumable weaponry and healing supplies that could be purchased. Fans were wondering if Intelligent Systems and Nintendo would be able to hit gold with Paper Mario: The Origami King, which featured a novel puzzle-based combat system (with, unfortunately, consumable weaponry) but an apparent return to form in terms of the emphasis on narrative. Given the series’ previous failures, few are likely to be upset that they won silver. The Origami King is a pleasant mix of simple pseudo-RPG features, excellent storytelling, and love-it-or-hate-it puzzle gameplay that can be adjusted based on player difficulty preferences.
