Is it true that the form of a mouse makes a huge difference? Yes, of course. It’s one of the most important aspects of mouse design, and it may have a significant impact on comfort and feel. It’s for this reason why the XTRFY M4 Gaming Mouse is so intriguing. This medium-sized, ergonomic, RGB gaming mouse checks many of my boxes for a good mouse, but there’s something about its form that I can’t get beyond.

The first thing you notice about the mouse is the holes that have been drilled into its matte surface. I didn’t miss the irony of having a mouse covered with holes like Swiss cheese. Thankfully, it didn’t feel like a cheese grater, and holding the mouse didn’t result in my fingers being sliced into tiny pieces.

The RGB looks well next to my RGB keyboard, and the mouse’s internal components hold up well. So, would this lovely kitchen-appliance in the form of a mouse meet my expectations?

Performance

The mouse is small and light, weighing about 69 grams, but it isn’t inexpensive. Although I like heavier mouse, I must admit that the lightweight feel and breathability were a nice surprise. I was particularly pleased with the PTFE skates’ control and the rounded edges on my mousepad. It slides over the skin like butter. With a maximum acceleration of 50G, it accurately captured all of my rapid motions after I adjusted my desired DPI and polling rate.

When pushed, mouse buttons 1 (left) and 2 (right) have a wonderful feel and tension. When pushed, Button 1 moves slightly to the left and right. This concerned me at first since it’s the button I use the most, but it wasn’t enough to keep me from playing.

The clicking sound is pleasant, and pressing it will make long gaming sessions more enjoyable. With 24-steps, the Scroll wheel is one of the finest I’ve used, and it’s smooth and silent. When surfing the web, there will be no annoying clicking for each step, and scrolling down will feel like brushing a feather.

The additional buttons on the mouse’s left side have a short travel time and a pleasant clicking sound. They were simple to grasp with my thumb and added a lot to my gaming experience. Extra buttons on my mouse are usually preferred, but not to the point that I have to think up reasons to use them. Because there are just two, making a decision was simple, allowing me to concentrate on playing.

The 1.8-meter EZcord was braided to match the mouse’s color. It wasn’t as supple or flexible as some other gaming mouse, but it was better than a standard cable. It’s ideal for usage with pro gamer mouse accessories like a mouse bungee for reducing drag. Mouse travel is inhibited when cables retain their form too tightly, but I didn’t have that problem with the M4. The mouse, as anticipated, utilizes a USB-A connection cord and was easy to set up.

With the ambient spill on the sides of the chassis, the RGB looks great, and the XTRFY logo shining from inside the device is aesthetically amazing. You may change the lighting settings by using the button under the scroll wheel and the side buttons, which includes rainbow, breathing, and off.

Unfortunately, since XTRFY does not offer software for changes or customization, this is the only method to change the lighting effects. This isn’t a big issue since the lights still look fantastic, but if you want to sync the lights on your whole gaming setup, you’re out of luck.

Two key-caps were included in the package, one with the XTRFY logo and the other with the initials ‘GG.’ It’s a great addition, and it replaces a few of keys on my keyboard.

Design

The ergonomic design of the M4 was meticulously developed with input from both casual and expert gamers. You may pick from a variety of color schemes that are both fascinating and non-offensive to the eyes. The Retro variant was a little too much for me in terms of aesthetics, but for fans of the old Commodore 64, Atari, and Nintendo, it’s ideal. I have to say, the design is very crisp and stands out against the current trend of gaming mouse with a lot of individuality.

The holes were first unsettling, but after a few hours of usage, I came to like them. The airflow beneath your hand was strange, yet it was quite pleasant. It was also a lot simpler to grip the mouse with my palm and fingertips.

It’s made especially for right-handed usage, so the few people who use their mouse with their left hands are out of luck. It’s also one of the lightest mouse I’ve ever felt, making tiny and big motions enjoyable and not demanding on the arms.

The mouse has a total of 6 buttons, including the wheel click. The RGB lighting effect is controlled by one of these buttons, while the other two additional buttons are located on the device’s left side. The few buttons make it seem small, and it covers all the basics without being overbearing. This does not include the DPI and polling rate controls on the bottom.

The disadvantage is that the device’s form isn’t for everyone. Because of the huge curves, it was difficult for me to get used to holding the mouse properly. It didn’t bother me when I used it gently, but when I used it often for work or gaming, the curves were somewhat too deep, causing my hand to cramp. Everyone’s palms are different, and your experience may vary, however compared to my everyday driver, the Razer Naga Chroma, it was simply too much for me.

Ambient light filters through from within the device into a bar that wraps around the front half of the mouse, introducing the lighting effects in an innovative manner. Underneath the holed chassis, an XTRFY emblem produces its own light, giving the mouse a distinct visual advantage over its competitors.

Durability

The completely plastic chassis ensures long-term durability, and the inside is protected against dust and spills with conformal coating. Although the perforations give the impression that it bends under pressure, it did not when I tried it. However, I discovered that it had a noticeable squeak.

The creak was unsettling, particularly for a $65 mouse, so I conducted some research to figure out what was going on. After a quick search on Google, I discovered that older versions were known to have this squeak, which XTFY addressed in the current ones.

With gaming mice, longevity is usually a big bonus, and the M4 will deliver. Aside from the creaks, the chassis is still solid, and the components it covers are durable. An Omron switch in the gadget can withstand 20 million clicks. According to Digital Citizen, that many clicks would take around 7.2 years. This mouse should fit your requirements if you’re a gaming enthusiast who wants to future-proof their gaming setup.

Braiding protects the cord, and rubber cables are always defeated by braiding. Most gamers aren’t bothered about cords being damaged, but if you have dogs like me, you’re constantly worried that the tasty-looking wire will be eaten through. The braiding adds an additional layer of protection.

Features

XTRFY M4 Gaming MouseThe Pixart 3389 adjustable sensor is housed within the mouse. It may be configured to monitor anything from tiny flicks and twists to big gliding movements. The CPI button on the bottom of the mouse, in the middle, controls it. For future reference, CPI is the same as DPI.

To show what it’s set to, the button has a color-coded light. This makes it simple to make changes on the fly while playing a competitive game. It has a broad range of choices, ranging from 400 to 16,000 DPI, with six levels in between. The M4 has you covered no matter what level of sensitivity you choose.

The polling rate switch is located at the rear of the mouse and has three settings: 125, 500, and 1000 Hz. Polling rates over 500Hz are generally unnoticeable, but you may increase them to 1000 if it suits your playing style. Competitive players usually select a lower DPI and a higher polling rate to improve accuracy and stability of aim.

The M4 is equipped with an ARM 32-bit microcontroller that delivers outstanding performance and speed. With rapid hand motions, high-speed processing is required, and the ARM 32-bit microcontroller performs well.

A simple lighting effects button is located underneath the scroll wheel. To increase/decrease brightness and choose lighting effect mode, hold the button while pushing the two side buttons. The Breathing mode, in which the ambient light billows up and down like the gadget is breathing, is my favorite of the settings. Even while it isn’t something you can directly customize with software, it gives the gadget a lot of life and personality.

The two additional buttons on the side offer more options for making game choices. They’re faster to operate than a keyboard keypress, yet they’re just as pleasant to hold in your hand.

The Final Word

It has the potential to be one of the finest medium-sized ergonomic gaming mouse on the market with a few small tweaks. There are a few functions that other gaming mouse have had for a long time that it lacks, and the sleek appearance isn’t nearly enough to win off the competition.

Despite its popularity, RGB requires a certain kind of player to invest in it. When they do, they expect to be able to fine-tune and modify things as they see fit. Because there is no method to synchronize colors, the M4 stands out among the RGB aficionados’ toolkit due to its lack of software.

If you don’t care about light synchronization, the device’s form may be a deterrent. Its deep curves make it difficult for certain players’ hands to hold for long periods of time. It wasn’t enough to keep me from working, but it was enough to make me feel uneasy. If none of these concerns you, it’s a good investment.

Aside from that, at around $100 USD, the mouse is a good gaming mouse. The black model costs about $59 USD, the colorful choices cost around $65 USD, and the Retro model costs around $69 USD. If you’ve decided on the M4, you may get it from Amazon.
