AMD Ryzen 5 2600X and Ryzen 7 2700X come close to 5.9Ghz in overclocking

AMD has released their new Ryzen 5 2600X and Ryzen 7 2700X, which come close to 5.9Ghz in overclocking. Read more in detail here: ryzen 5 2600x.

AMD Ryzen 2nd Gen CPUs will be available on April 19th, and we already have X470 chipset motherboards ready from various OEMs that will ensure you get the most out of the Ryzen 2000 series processors. A few individuals have obtained Ryzen CPUs for testing purposes, and I recently released a study on the Ryzen 7 2700X, which demonstrated that it outperformed the Core i7 8700K in both gaming and productivity.

There are a few more individuals who have attempted to test the capabilities of the new Ryzen CPUs, like TSAIK, who overclocked the Ryzen 5 2600X and Ryzen 7 2700X to around 5.9GHz. According to a HotHardware article, he is utilizing Liquid Nitrogen cooling, which seems to be correct since conventional liquid cooling cannot provide this much cooling when the CPUs’ boost speeds are less than 4.5GHz.

AMD processors, particularly Ryzen processors, are restricted to severe overclocking, but based on the findings of the new CPUs, it seems that they can be overclocked much farther. Although I am not sure whether these CPUs are capable of extreme overclocking, it seems that if they are given enough cooling, they would easily surpass the previous generation.

The Ryzen 5 2600X is a six-core CPU with just six threads, while the 1600X featured 12 threads in earlier generations of Ryzen processors. The MSI X470 Gaming Plus motherboard achieved 5882.97MHz at a very high voltage of 1.768V during the test. The TDP of the Ryzen 7 2700X is 95 Watts, whereas the TDP of the Ryzen 7 2700X is 105 Watts. A CPU running at 1.7V becomes so hot that it may easily fry if it isn’t cooled with nitrogen.

The Ryzen 7 2700X, on the other hand, was also close to 5.9GHz, clocking in at 5884.24MHz and 1.76V. The Ryzen 5 2600X has a 3.6GHz/4.2GHz core/boost clock, whereas the Ryzen 7 2700X has a 3.7GHz/4.3GHz core/boost clock. For a general user that utilizes air or liquid cooling, reaching close to 5.9GHz will be difficult.
