I am a fan of playing video games. I’m not the most hardcore gamer, I don’t buy every new release, I don’t play for many hours a day, and I don’t have a million hours of gameplay under my belt. But I love MMO’s. I’ve played World of Warcraft (WoW), Everquest II (EQ2), and Guild Wars II. I’ve never played an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game: an online game with millions of players playing the same game at the same time) before. I’ve also dabbled in MMO’s on console, but never on PC.
If you have ever wanted to play an MMO but have been put off by the whole “wasting a lot of time” aspect of it all, perhaps this will be of use to you. In this piece I cover the steps of convincing myself that it was worth it to invest a bunch of time into World of Warcraft.

MMOs, or massively multiplayer online games, have been around long enough that even gamers who don’t play them are familiar with the term. And, despite the fast shift in gaming trends and expectations, games like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV have proved that MMOs still have a place in today’s world. MMOs were exclusively available on PC at the time. While the PC remains its primary platform, technology has advanced to the point that the genre is now available on home consoles and even mobile phones. Some players consider MMOs to be their primary source of gaming pleasure, while others see them as a comfort game to play after beating the newest triple-A title and needing to unwind. But, for players who aren’t acquainted with or haven’t played an MMO before, how does it feel to step into one today?
MMOs were something I never had the opportunity to play as a kid. During the peak of Ragnarok Online’s popularity in the Philippines, I didn’t have enough money in my early high school years to justify buying the prepaid cards needed to play the game. Not to mention the need to rent a computer from a web store in addition to purchasing the necessary cards. It wasn’t much of a choice to play at home, either. Our dial-up internet couldn’t handle the load.
I’ll admit it. I don’t play video games that often. I think that they are a waste of time and heavily overpriced; I’m much more interested in spending my time on a variety of other things. However, I still like to view the genre from the outside in and see what it’s all about. Oh, and there’s also that whole argument that I can play games on my computer and smartphones and tablets, so why bother with a dedicated gaming system? A little over a year ago, I decided to give a game called Star Trek Online a shot. I was a little skeptical about MMOs when they were first gaining popularity, but decided to give it a go..
