PlayStation 4’s Uncharted 3 multiplayer beta test is coming. But if you want to play it, you’ll need a PlayStation Plus subscription. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception will be the only Uncharted game to require a PlayStation Plus subscription when it’s released in 2014. When Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune launched in 2007, it required a PlayStation Network pass to play online. In 2010, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves required a PSN account to play online, but Naughty Dog later changed the policy after fan feedback.
Last year, Naughty Dog revealed a new PlayStation 4 exclusive project: Uncharted 3. The game will be available exclusively on PS3, and will be the final entry in the series. However, the series’ co-creators, Amy Hennig and Bruce Straley, took to the stage during the PS4 reveal, revealing the game would be open world. Details of the game were scarce at the time, but now, quite a bit of info has been revealed. Naughty Dog is confirming multiplayer will be a feature of the game, with a multiplayer pass required for online multiplayer.
Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception is one of the most anticipated games of the year, especially for those that enjoyed the previous two games, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. But it appears that not everyone will be able to play the multiplayer aspects of the game without an online pass.
This comes as no surprise, given that Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception is one of Sony’s most popular PS3 games this year. Each copy of Uncharted 3 comes with an online pass code that must be entered before playing the game’s multiplayer mode.
Why is it necessary to have an online pass? They want to make more money, but it’s also the company’s method of combating second-hand purchases. You can still acquire a used copy, but if you want to play multiplayer (assuming the online pass for that copy has already been used), you’ll have to purchase your own $10 online pass from the PSN store.
Whether we like it or not, the online pass is gradually being adopted. Ubisoft is using the Online Pass concept, and Sony seems to be following suit. THQ, EA, and Warner Bros. (Mortal Kombat) are all doing it, and it’s just a matter of time until every game publisher incorporates the Online Pass into their multiplayer titles.
