Between the Nintendo 64 and the GameCube, the Smash Bros series has become a staple for fans of the series. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the series, and the modding community has been hard at work to give the game a more retro feel.

It’s been nearly 20 years since Super Smash Bros. Melee first hit stores, and yet this fan-made game still holds up today (as evidenced by the fact that it has been featured in several recent fighting game tournaments). One of the reasons for its lasting popularity is the fact that it has a unique retro-style graphics style that makes it feel like a throwback to the Nintendo 64 era.

Take a look at the screenshot above. It’s a screenshot of a mod for Super Smash Bros. Melee, created by the aptly named “superkeen”. I’ve seen much interest in this particular mod, as most of the posts I’ve seen on the topic have made reference to the fact that the mod is based on the game “Melee”, rather than “Smash” as the name might imply.. If you’re somewhat of an emulator connoisseur then the likelihood is you’ve got yourself a Dolphin Emulator, and Super Smash Bros. Melee will almost certainly be in your library. On the other hand, if you’ve not managed to get yourself a Switch yet, then you might just be stuck with using a PC Emulator to play some of the older Smash titles pre-dating Super Smash Bros. Ultimate anyway. With either scenario, playing Smash Bros. melee with this awesome Super Smash Bros N64 mod equipped will totally transform the GameCube title into an N64 lookalike.

The details of the Super Smash Bros. N64 mod

Thanks to the efforts of modder and video producer Connor Rentz, the Super Smash Bros N64 mod is now accessible on the Smash Bros. melee 64 website. The mod will bring a game that “looks and sounds a bit more like a Nintendo 64 game” to the current Melee ROM.

“Super Smash Bros. Melee 64 not only uses lower quality character models, but also has fewer polygons on many stages as well as simpler (and often lower resolution) textures,” according to the website, which also claims that “in many cases, this mod will run more smoothly than other versions of Super Smash Bros. Melee.” Make sure Dolphin is operating at the native GameCube resolution or below for even better performance. Playing at the original 4:3 aspect ratio is another method to enhance performance (and make the game look as intended).”

In other words, as compared to previous Super Smash Bros N64 mods, this one provides a lot smoother experience, with much cleaner graphics and crisper background music.

If you don’t know how to get this Super Smash Bros. N64 mod to work, there’s lots of information on the mod page, and once you do, you’ll find that it was well worth the time it took to get it set up. It’s a charming little mod!

Though I don’t have a Special Smash Bros. 64 edition of the N64, I do have a SNES modded version of the N64 game, and its one of my favorite games. I’ve had my Wii, N64 and GameCube hooked up to the TV for quite some time now, and have a lot of fun playing Smash Bros. Melee and a few other mods. With that being said, I’ve been thinking about doing an N64 mod to the Smash Bros. series. I’ve been wanting to do that for a while now, but haven’t ever gotten around to it. A few days ago, I decided to finally start working on the project. I’m not going to say much about it now,. Read more about super smash bros release date and let us know what you think.
